Central Washington University, more popularly known as simply CWU, is a public university in Ellensburg, which is a city in Washington, USA, that served as the county seat of Kittitas County, having a population estimated at a number of more than 15 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
CWU was established in 1891, first starting as a teacher's college, still one of the institution's primary majors, being opened under the name of Washington State Normal School, its current name being adopted in 1977. It presently offers its students, who number more than 10 000, undergraduate and graduate programs, in various fields of study, including a Science Honors Research Program.
CWU's sports teams call themselves the Wildcats and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, in 13 sports, for both men and women, which include basketball, baseball, track and field, volleyball and softball. Their distinctive colors are crimson and black and their mascot is Wellington P. Wildcat.
NFL quarterbacks Jon Kitna and Mike Reilly, author Stephen L. Nelson, actor Craig T. Nelson, astronaut Dorothy M. Matcalf - Lindenburger, and U.S. Air National Guard Brigadier General John R. Croft are among CWU's noteworthy alumni.
